Pets can show symptoms first
Pets are often affected by carbon monoxide (CO) before people. Because they are smaller and breathe faster, they may get ill sooner. If your pet suddenly becomes ill indoors, it could be a warning sign of carbon monoxide in your home.
Common symptoms in pets
Watch for:
Confusion or strange behaviour
Difficulty breathing
Vomiting
Loss of coordination
Collapse or seizures
Birds and small animals such as hamsters can be affected very quickly.
What to do
If your pet shows these symptoms indoors:
1
Get everyone outside into fresh air immediately.
2
Open doors and windows if safe to do so.
3
Avoid using appliances you think may be faulty.
4
Seek veterinary help for your pet.
