We’re particularly encouraged by the inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in the guidance, acknowledging the unique challenges that both LGBTQ+ people and young people face that increase their risk of homelessness and make them less visible, creating additional barriers to long-term solutions.
We see every day that solving the problem of homelessness isn’t just about getting people off the streets for a night, or helping them in crisis. It’s about addressing the underlying causes so those at risk don’t become homeless in the first place. And it’s about working with those experiencing homelessness or living in a hostile or unsafe environment to find a secure, sustainable living situation and ongoing independence.
Every year, akt’s Winter campaign shines a light on how urgent these situations can be for LGBTQ+ young people. Many are kicked out or face abuse because of who they are; others live in fear in their homes, unable to express their identity. And when temperatures drop, an already unbearable situation can be life-threatening.
It’s for these reasons that akt is keen to collaborate with others to support young people and spread what works – nationally, regionally and locally. We are encouraged to see these bold commitments and want to see them delivered; and while Christmas is an ambitious deadline, it’s when many people in our community need us most and would be the perfect gift that could transform lives for the better.
