"It’s not all glitter and rainbows (but that definitely helps) - the actual work is so rewarding and I’m proud to support lgbtq+ young people”

Volunteers’ Week (1st - 7th June) is a national celebration of the fantastic contribution made by volunteers across the UK and for us here at akt is a chance to celebrate the vital work our volunteers do every single day. It’s safe to say without the energy, skills and commitment of our volunteers akt would not be able to support young people in the way that we do. We are constantly receiving feedback from young people about the benefits their time with a volunteer has brought them – it was "what I needed", "something to look forward to" and "really great."

Volunteers have been at the heart of what we do since akt began in 1989. We now have volunteers involved across a wide range of roles, in different locations and giving varying amounts of time to volunteer. These include mentors and digital mentors working directly with young people to provide a holistic one-to-one service, supporting them with everything from coming out, to information about safer sex practices and issues with budgeting and money. Our hosts also play a vital role, providing safe accommodation and a supportive environment in which a young person can thrive.

“For me it's seeing the difference you can make to people's lives by supporting akt. I've been able to meet some wonderful people, hear their stories and see lives be improved by the work akt do.”

We also have volunteers tirelessly supporting us at various fundraising and awareness-raising events throughout the year, collecting donations, flying the akt flag and speaking to people about our work. We have a team of fantastic youth programme volunteer supporting with the organisation of this year’s Youth Conference, volunteers helping out in our offices as well as young creators creating fantastic online content for young people.

Thanks to the ongoing commitment of our volunteers it’s been a great year for volunteering at akt. Our volunteers have given an amazing 13,361 hours of volunteering since the start of July 2018 and we currently have 142 active volunteers across 9 different roles.

There are many reasons people who want to volunteer haven’t started yet – if you’re one of them, akt has volunteer roles to suit all different types of interests, experience and time commitment levels. We want our volunteering to be as flexible and accessible as possible – volunteering could mean anything from walking with us in a Pride parade once a year, meeting with a young person for an hour a week as a mentor or delivering a presentation about akt at your local school. In return we can offer you ongoing training and support, a chance to meet other like-minded volunteers and the opportunity to volunteer for a thriving LGBTQ+ charity.

“What I enjoy most is meeting young people from all different backgrounds and actually being inspired by them!”

If you’re interested or want more information, drop us an email to or browse the roles we’re currently recruiting here.

Thank you so much to all of our volunteers past and present for helping to make akt what it is today – Happy Volunteers’ Week!
