I hope you all managed to find a place to relax and enjoy summer, despite the challenges all of us continue to face right now.

In the absence of Pride events and our annual Youth Conference, this summer has felt very different. However, six months into the pandemic I continue to be truly amazed by akt’s team of staff, volunteers and trustees, who continue to do amazing work, now mainly online, to ensure an ever-increasing number of LGBTQ+ young people are safe and supported as they face homelessness, rejection and abuse.

I am sharing our annual Impact Report. In particular, I’m very proud that we’re reaching the most vulnerable and marginalised young people within our community, however I am saddened that our work demonstrates that young Black, people of colour and trans people continue to be the most at risk and unsupported amongst LGBTQ+ young people within society.

Last year 97% of the young people akt helped in 2019-20 achieved ‘self-identified’ improved life outcomes. This reflects the very high standard of the incredible work our Services and Youth Engagement team deliver in providing a comprehensive level of support to young people.

2019 was also a very positive time financially for akt. Myself and the team are so very grateful for the generosity of the people who fundraised for us within the community, our donors and our corporate partners. We of course did not fully realise at the time the challenges we would face in 2020 through the pandemic. Therefore this support has been so timely and critical in helping us cope with challenges created by the pandemic, including a significant increase in footfall by young people which has brought with it a substantial increase in young people needing emergency financial support and secure accommodation. The increased funding has also been used to make vital adaptions around our home and office working, so we can continue to provide young people with the best support possible. Furthermore, your generosity also guarantees sustainability for akt and our services as we go forward into facing the longe- term impacts of Covid-19 on the lives of the LGBTQ+ young people we support.

And finally, please check out our social media posts on the Gender Recognition Act (GRA) reform and read our statement here. I hope you will join akt in standing as allies with the trans, non-binary and gender-diverse members of our community at this time, to ensure they achieve the equity they deserve.

Thank you for all for your incredible support – we need you and are so proud of you for continuing to help us provide safe homes and better futures for LGBTQ+ young people.
