fighting anti-blackness and racism at akt

Anti-blackness and racism are systemic in the voluntary sector, within the LGBTQ+ community and wider society. we recognise our role in confronting and fighting this.

Minutes

We recognise our responsibility to challenge racism in our society and in ourselves as individuals.

Why ‘anti-blackness’? This article was initially inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and we wanted to call out this specific form of racism, which we see in British culture.
However, our approach to tackling racism as a charity takes into account the experiences of all minority ethnicities in the UK.

akt’s steps for tackling racism:

We’re committed to learning from mistakes at akt and ensuring that we become a charity that better supports all of our staff and reflects the young people we’re proud to work with.

below are some of the ways we’re working against racism in our society:

  • Forming an internal equality, diversity and inclusion (edi) committee, to ensure all staff feel valued, supported and heard with the charity.
  • Creating resources to understand and combat anti-blackness and racism made available to staff.
  • Proactively recruiting more people of colour and black people onto our board.
  • Establishing two new formal policies:
    • akt will not be part of any all-white discussion panels.
    • all job interview panels at akt will include people from black and minority ethnicities.
  • Continually reviewing our work around racism at all levels within the organisation.
  • Carrying out trainings to combat racism and anti-blackness for board members, leadership team and all staff.
