The aim of this role is to support AKT in building its profile and position as the national LGBT youth homelessness charity and ensuring youth homelessness is recognised as the most urgent human rights issue facing the LGBT community in the UK.

The person performing this role will work with AKT’s Communications Specialist and CEO and also engage young people across all areas of communications, including public affairs, social media, press and PR, digital communications (website and newsletter in particular).

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Recruitment and engagement of young people as Communications Ambassadors
  • Manage AKT’s day-to-day social media output
  • Supporting our digital communications work, in particular our web content
  • Supporting our Communications Specialist with media events and activity nationally and in our key cities of operation
  • Use the CMS to upload, format and create website content
  • Supporting AKT’s engagement with the press and media
  • Supporting AKT’s digital project ‘inter-AKT’ through communications activity and engagement projects
  • Respond to internal communications requests 
  • Represent AKT appropriately and effectively at all times
  • Organise and participate in some events out of office hours
  • Other duties commensurate with the nature of the post
  • Incorporate AKT’s values and strategic aims into work and behaviours

Volunteers should meet the following criteria

  • Excellent research, written and verbal communication skills, tailored to audience
  • Strong digital literacy, confident harnessing social media and tech in varied ways
  • Ability to take a creative approach to problem solving
  • Ability to work as part of a team and with other stakeholders in collaborative ways
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop working relationships
  • Strong organisational skills with an eye for detail
  • Confident working proactively and independently
  • Able to manage own time, plan, prioritise work and meet deadlines
  • Understanding of issues relating to LGBT young people and youth homelessness
  • Experience producing engaging digital content in a variety of formats
  • Experience using Microsoft, Google Docs and/or other collaborative software
  • A demonstrable passion for making positive social impact
