Happy Non-Binary day one and all! We at akt understand that gender is not binary and those who are outside of this box experience many distinct forms of oppression and bigotry. However today is a day of celebration, to uplift Non-Binary voices and causes.

The term Non-Binary has frequently been shortened to NB, however there has been a push to use Enby or Nby, as to not cause confusion with the other meaning of NB – Non-black, a useful term to describe the specific discrimination and oppression faced by non-black POC.

To celebrate the lives and loves of Non-Binary people we have put together a list of media that is created by and for Non-Binary people and which celebrates their identities!



Travis Alabanza is a writer, theatre maker and performance artist whose work focuses on trans and Non-Binary experiences. Their second book, None of the Above, is released on 4th August.

Beyond the Gender Binary by Alok Vaid-Menon is a short book analysing the gender binary both internally and externally. Alok also has an excellent interview with Jameela Jamil on her podcast iWeigh episode 10 where they explore these concepts.

Life as a Unicorn - A Journey from Shame to Pride and Everything in Between by Amrou Al-kadhi (also known as their drag name Glamrou) is a book abbout coming out, finding one’s true identity and how that clashes with culture and religion.

In Their Shoes: Navigating Non-Binary Life by the writer, broadcaster and model Jamie Windust is a humorous memoir of their experience of finding their identity.

Dear Senthuran: A Black Spirit Memoir by Akwaeke Emezi is an eye-opening and sometimes shocking and graphic collection of experiences by Akwaeke from their younger years in Nigeria to going through affirmative surgery in the US. They also describe their experience of multiplicity from both a personal and cultural lens.

Judith Butler is a seminal author of many works that have pushed forward the conversation in relation to gender diversity and its performative aspects. Her work is an excellent place to start to develop your knowledge of the systems which cause the gender binary to perpetuate.

Gender Euphoria, edited by Laura Kate Dale, is a collection of short stories written by Trans and Non-Binary people with a focus on Euphoric experiences that they have had throughout their lives. Many of these memoirs are written by Non-Binary people and it is a great resource for accessing Trans and Non-Binary Euphoria.

Sissy: A Coming-of-Gender Story is a memoir by Non-Binary activist Jacob Tobia. From their experiences of growing up in a Methodist church to being inside the walls of the White House, it explores all aspects of gender identity and culture that Jacob has experienced throughout their life.

TV Shows:

She-Ra and The Princesses of Power, an American cartoon created by ND “Nate” Stevenson who has previously won a GLAAD media award for their comic Lumberjanes, is a reimagining of the classic She-ra series, with an inclusive and loving focus, and starring previously mentioned Jacob Tobia in a Non-Binary role.

Sort Of is a sitcom created by Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo. Baig is a genderfluid Non-Binary person and this series focusses on their character Sabi Mehboob, a Non-Binary person trying to balance their life as a child of Pakistani immigrants to Canada, a bartender at an LGBTQ bookstore and a caregiver.

Feel Good is a comedy-drama show created by Non-Binary comedian Mae Martin, as the semi-fictionalised version of themselves and explores relationships, substance misuse and sobriety, mental health, their gender identity and their past.

Sex Education, whilst not having been created by a Non-Binary person, offers excellent representation to people across the LGBTQ+ community and of diverse gender experiences and identities.



Colors of Tobi is a documentary following the life of trans youth Tobi and their family, living in a small village in Hungary, as they travel through Europe, and discover their identity.

They, a 2017 American drama set in Chicago, follows a weekend in the life of J, their experiences with puberty blockers and being away from family in Iran. J is played by trans man Rhys Fehrenbacher who was in the process of transitioning during filming.

My Name is Pauli Murray looks at the life and ideas of Pauli Murray, a Non-Binary Black lawyer, activist and poet who influenced both Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Thurgood Marshall.



The Happy Place – Non-Binary writer and activist Ben Pechey hosts a podcast to uplift, motivate or otherwise distract you from any worries in life you may have.

Gender Stories – hosted by Alex Iantafii, it is a continuation of his book “How to Understand Your Gender: a practical guide for exploring who you are” and reflects on how gender impacts different areas of our lives.


Art and performance:

Jacob V Joyce is an artist, illustrator and workshop facilitator. They describe themselves as a multidisciplinary artist amplifying historical and nourishing new queer/anti-colonial narratives.

Rudy Loewe is a visual artist exploring black histories and social politics through painting, drawing and text.

Subira Joy is a Black, trans, genderqueer spoken-word performer and activist, based in Brighton, UK. Their work weaves together the personal and political, through experiences and imaginations, spoken with rage, softness, and laughter.

Adrian Blount/GodXXXNoirphiles is a Non-Binary drag artist, performer and parent. Their content includes make-up tutorials accompanied by lessons on Black History and drag, as well as their queer birthing experience.

Wednesday Holmes is a Non-Binary artist and illustrator who creates feel-good art focussed on mental health and queerness.



Big name artists like Sam Smith, Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato have all recently come out as queer/Non-Binary.

Claud is a Non-Binary indie bedroom pop artist.

Left at London is a music artist named Nate Puff. A trans Non-Binary woman, they originally grew their following doing covers on Vine, but they have exploded in popularity with their albums Transgender Street Legend volumes 1,2 & 3.

Leith Ross is a Non-Binary artist who has gained popularity after posting their songs on TikTok.

Black Obsidian Soundsystem is a QTIBPOC led sound system, based in London

Swsh is a Non-Binary producer, singer and songwriter. Their voice is strong and soulful, and their down-to-earth lyrics immediately resonate with listeners.

Janelle Monae is a rapper and hip-hop artist from New York, who has been widely described as an innovator in their realm of music.
