akt is the national LGBTQ+ youth homelessness charity; focused on prevention and early action we provide safe homes, mentoring, training, advocacy and support to young people who are homeless or living in a hostile environment after coming out to their parents, care givers and peers.  

JOB SUMMARY

We have just completed a 12 month pilot of our Youth Engagement Programme and following an in-depth review and consultation with young people we have decided to grow and expand this work.

This role will ensure LGBTQ+ young people have an active and meaningful role in the development of all of our current and future work. You will also lead on the launch of our new YouthSpace in London and help to develop the space into a thriving hub of meaningful youth activities and support services.

KEY TASKS

You will:

  • Lead and further develop our Youth Engagement Programme, in partnership with akt’s Services team
  • Ensure young people are meaningfully engaged in the co-creation of akt’s services and projects.
  • With the support of a Youth Worker based in Manchester develop, manage and grow akt’s youth work programme and our work with young volunteers
  • Recruit, train and support akt’s Young Ambassadors to engage with, inform and contribute to our work
  • Manage and grow our programme of national and regional youth events (currently LGBTQ Youth Conference & Youth Strategy Day)
  • Work with young people and colleagues to explore the potential for new national youth events and activities e.g. a national LGBTQ+ youth camp, activity and adventure holidays.
  • Support young people to develop and create a ever-growing collection of online resources and videos to provide advice, support and reassurance to young LGBTQ+ people, on issues and topics that matter to them most
  • In partnership with our London Services Manager, develop a programme of events and activities based out of London YouthSpace
  • Support fundraising and business development activities in relation to the growth of our youth work and youth engagement work

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

  • A professional youth work qualification, or considerable experience of working with young people
  • Experience of developing youth services
  • A proven ability to lead, motivate and support young people on projects
  • Charismatic, friendly but disciplined in approach to engagement activities
  • Able to form strong and appropriate relationships, demonstrating excellent communications skills at all levels and assess needs of young people
  • An in-depth understanding of the issues facing LGBTQ+ young people
  • An understanding of language and expectations of language and expectations of young people
  • Ability to work independently, supervise and motivate participants
  • Experience of consulting and involving service users
  • Event management experience

 Desirable

  • Experience of working in a housing or homelessness setting
  • Experience of networking and building local partnerships with community organisations and youth services
  • A clean driving license
