akt London is looking for a Caseworker!

 Salary: £27,000 per annum

Working in a small and dedicated team, you will provide support to London services. The role will involve the provision of advice and support to a diverse range of young LGBTQ+ persons aged 16-25 who are homeless, vulnerably housed or in a hostile environment. Our main focus is in maintaining our ability to provide the highest service possible giving our young people the opportunities they need to realise their own life plans and to reach their own goals and objectives. Overall, we aim to get young LGBTQ+ people into accommodation and work or education so they can end their period of homelessness.

Job summary

  • To assess the needs of young LGBTQ+ people who are homeless, vulnerably housed, or in a hostile environment, and to carry out casework on their behalf.
  • Identifying young people’s support needs and assisting them developing a detailed support plan for short-term intervention with each young person on your caseload.
  • Finding accommodation for these young people and being creative in sourcing new accommodation routes and building relationships with accommodation providers in cooperation with the Services Manager.
  • Providing weekly keywork sessions for residents of our LGBTQ+ supported accommodation scheme Purple door.
  • Carrying out day-to-day housing management tasks, including carrying out health and safety checks
  • Attending appointments with young LGBTQ+ people when needed including providing advocacy with statutory services i.e. Local Authorities.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities 

  • Employing creative thinking and practices to ensure that LGBTQ+ young people are supported and motivated to achieve their goals.
  • Showing empathy when resolving young people’s concerns.
  • To develop and manage your caseload and support opportunities that enable young people to meet their changing needs, through a range of interventions.
  • To facilitate the involvement of young people in akt's youth inclusion opportunities and youth engagement strategy.
  • To maximise the income of young LGBTQ+ people, setting up housing benefit and other welfare benefits, securing grants, searching for new housing streams and employment or education opportunities.
  • Undertaking any other duties to aid the good running of the project, as required by the charity.
  • Implement akt's Equal Opportunities policies and to work actively to overcome discrimination on grounds of race, sex, disability, sexuality or status within akt’s service. To take responsibility appropriate to the post for tackling racism and promoting good race, ethnic and community relations.

Working and environmental conditions

  • The post is based in the London Office with requirement to attend Purple Door our LGBTQ+ supported housing project.
  • The post holder will work as part of a team and will have some flexibility to manage own workload.
  • Young people will be met in a range of settings including home visits and other organisations as well as at the akt office.
  • Some evening and occasional weekend working will be required as part of this post, in line with akt's flexible working policy. All care will be taken to make sure any caring responsibilities will be accounted for.


Essential criteria

  • Experience of working in supported housing/a housing setting with young people
  • Experience of rent account administration and making housing benefit and universal credit claims relating to supported housing
  • Experience of day-to-day housing management tasks, including carrying out health and safety checks.
  • Experience of working one-on-one with and assessing the needs of homeless people or similar disadvantaged client groups.
  • Empathetic attitude to homeless and vulnerably-housed people.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the welfare issues and housing legislation affecting vulnerable young people.
  • Good communication, negotiation, influencing and advocacy skills with individuals and organisations.
  • Commitment to LGBTQ+ equality and a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination and exclusion on the grounds of age, race or ethnicity, gender or gender identity, sexual orientation, faith or belief, disability, socio-economic status, or caring responsibility.
  • Ability to keep clear and up-to-date case records and proficient use of Microsoft and office365 based applications.
  • Ability to adhere to and implement Health & Safety, HR and operational policies

Desirable Criteria 

  • Knowledge and understanding of child protection, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.
  • Knowledge of Mental Health conditions
  • Knowledge and understanding of LGBTQ+ services and networks in Greater London.
  • Knowledge and understanding of intersectional identities and complex related needs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of fostering and mentoring best practice.
  • Knowledge of immigration needs.
