Meeting new people is exciting but it’s important to remain cautious when you’re meeting someone for the first time.

Make sure a close friend knows where you’re going and who you’re meeting.

Stick to a public place when you meet for the first time and don’t let someone pressure you into meeting somewhere you don’t want to.

Remember that apps like Tinder and Grindr are 18+ only.

some red flags to watch out for:

  • They’re pressuring you or make you feel uncomfortable – trust your instincts
  • They’re pushing you to drink a lot or take drugs
  • They make you feel bad about yourself or guilty
  • They’re asking you for money – it could be a scam, even if they say it’s an emergency

sexual health tips:

  • Consent can be withdrawn at any time and you don’t owe anyone sex.
  • Protect yourself with a condom (including on sex toys) or use a dental dam.
  • Wash your hands before and after sex and make sure sex toys are washed with soap and water too.
  • Get tested for STDs regularly and after sex with a new partner. You can even get free home testing kits.
  • If you have any symptoms or are worried you might have an STI, speak to your GP or visit an STI or GUM clinic. They won’t judge you and there’s nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about.
