Research

AKT’s approach to research is to actively address the scarcity of quality, real world studies which can:

  • Inform our work and lead to more appropriate and needs focused services for LGBT young people
  • Help lobby for change in attitudes, behaviours within society and within legislature in order to challenge homophobia and transphobia

AKT is developing a programme of research to address what we see as our key priorities:

  1. Identify the level of LGBT youth homelessness across UK
  2. Develop a case for support by identifying more coherently the needs of LGBT young people who are homeless or living in hostile environments; and from this provide a model of how these needs might be addressed within mainstream and specialist provision

In 2008 AKT undertook a groundbreaking piece of research examining mainstream providers approach to supporting LGBT young people, focusing on 12 national, regional and local housing and homelessness services. Please click on the link below for the executive summary

Research Report - Executive Summary

Each year AKT conducts a survey across Pride events. In 2009 we have explored the issues around faith and coming out to inform our work in supporting LGBT young people of faith. Watch out for our online report later in the year.

We are currently working with senior researchers from York and Kent University on an Archive project which tracks the 20 year history of AKT.

If you are a researcher interested in working with AKT as a volunteer; helping us develop our programme of work please contact our Chief Executive.
