Criminal Records Bureau

All AKT staff and volunteers are required to have an Enhanced Criminal Records Disclosure before being confirmed in their positions as we work with children and vulnerable young people.

The Albert Kennedy Trust is registered with the Criminal Records Bureau as an Umbrella Body and as such is entitled to request Criminal Records Disclosures on behalf of other agencies.

AKT is willing to offer this service to lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or trans voluntary sector organisations that are entitled to ask “exempt questions” as part of their recruitment processes.

Fee: £5 administrative charge + CRB fee

The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (ROA) ensures that ex-offenders who have not re-offended for a period of time since the date of their conviction are not discriminated against when applying for jobs. The ROA enables ex-offenders to ‘wipe the slate clean’ of their criminal records in the sense that they are no longer legally required to disclose to an organisation convictions that are ‘spent’, unless the role they are applying for is exempted from the Act.

Specific roles may be exempt if they involve supervised or unsupervised contact with children and/or vulnerable adults. AKT or the CRB can give you more information on all the above and if AKT agrees to act as an Umbrella Body we will support agencies in developing appropriate policies relating to:

• Criminal record disclosures policies, handling & security
• Employing ex-offenders

Trans applicants - The CRB has a special application procedure for trans people who do not wish to reveal details of their previous gender to the person who asked them to complete an application form for a CRB check.
