WINTER APPEAL

Hi I’m Lloyd, I’m 34 and live in SW London. I feel supporting young people is really important, they are our future and they deserve to be invested in. Being gay is one of this things that transcends most things in society - it can impact peoples’ lives regardless of gender, race, religion, culture and class.

I grew up gay and believed that if people found out what I really was people would hate me, think I’m disgusting and I would end up alone. I also thought I was the only gay out there and never thought I would even meet another gay person or fall in love - sounds stupid but it’s true. Looking back on young Lloyd it's really sad to think that he felt that his friends and family might turn out to hate him for being who he was born to be. This was in the 90s and I wasn’t aware that there was any support out there for people like me. I had some really dark times and I think that if I knew about an organisation like AKT it may have made my teenage years easier, just to know I wasn’t alone and that I could actually say the word ‘gay’ without feeling ashamed.

It makes me sad to think there are young people out there today who hate themselves just because they're gay. I believe this has to stop. It’s a tough enough world already for young people. AKT can help support young gay people all across the country in all manner of ways. I think if can help raise enough money that helps AKT to print off some leaflets and some kid who is having the most awful time can pick up and realise they are not alone or find shelter or anything -  that would be the most amazing thing ever and that is what is what go me around the 26+ miles in the London Marathon.
