WINTER APPEAL

I first heard about the Albert Kennedy Trust through a post on the internet of the AKT Now campaign with Andrew Hayden-Smith and Paul O’Grady amongst others.

After seeing the video I then decided to do a bit more research about AKT and read a bit more about the work that the trust do.  After reading about the work they do we felt we needed to help as it is shocking that in this day and age people are still facing prejudice because of their sexuality.

After discussing with Catherine what we where going to do in order to raise awareness of the charity and fundraise, we thought why not give ourselves a year to do as much as we can with varies activities and events hopefully ending with the great north run in September to raise as much as we could for such a great cause.

Once we had decided what we where going to do we decided to start with a physical challenge and climb Ben Nevis. I managed to rope in my friends Kathryn , David and Kimberly too.

Catherine and I had already done some smaller climbs such as Ben Lomond in preparation so we were all prepared when we set out to climb Ben Nevis on the 16th May. The climb got off to a great start, the weather was great in the morning and we where all full of high spirits.  The further up the mountain we got the worse the weather got. The rain started to come down heavily and there was even some snow on the mountain, but we kept going and got three quarters of the way to the top when visibility became really bad and we where advised by more experienced climbers to turn back.

Although we had to turn back we managed to raise awareness of the charity with people stopping us on the mountain to ask about the work that AKT does and we also managed to raise £390. We are now looking forward to our next fundraising event in aid of the Albert Kennedy Trust.
