THE PURPLE CIRCLE
WINTER APPEAL

My name is James and I heard about the Albert Kennedy Trust through the LGBT Network at work. I couldn’t believe some of the horror stories I had heard and that people younger than myself where living on the streets and decided I wanted to do some fundraising.

I signed up for the Leeds Half Marathon in May this year. Although I had done some shorter fun runs with friends I had never attempted anything this hard – 13.2 miles!

I was worried about training but after speaking to the Albert Kennedy Trust they were able to provide me with a training plan to get me up to the 13.2 miles in time. They also provided me lots of support with fundraising – from setting up a just giving page to ideas on how to raise addition funds.

I received my purple AKT running vest in the post and as the big day approached I have to admit I was very scared!

The race its self was hard work – it was very hot weather which didn’t help but there were lots of people there cheering us on – and I can’t explain how happy I felt when I crossed the finish line – I was so proud of what I had achieved – I raised money for an excellent cause and also hit a personal best by finishing a half marathon – and in a time of 2 hours – not bad!

I would advise anyone to have a go at a challenge event for AKT – even if running is not your thing they are plenty of other options and the charity are really supportive throughout.

I’ve got the running bug now!
